Falcon 9 lunar crash gives South Korea and Chile data to improve Artemis landers

A four-tonne Falcon 9 rocket stage crashed into the Moon on August 5, 2026, creating an estimated 18-metre crater and giving scientists a rare impact to study. No telescope captured the moment of impact, but South Korea's Danuri satellite later photographed the crater. Chile's Cerro Paranal observatory detected sodium and lithium spectral lines in the impact plume. The debris originated from a Falcon 9 launch carrying lunar landers in January 2025. Scientists will use the data to improve crater models and design safer landers and bases for Artemis.
