Fact-checkers debunk deepfakes and false claims about flydubai flight FZ1073

Misinformation and deepfakes about the flydubai flight FZ1073 incident are spreading widely on social media, prompting fact-checking efforts by ABC NEWS Verify to debunk false narratives. False claims include an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory promoted by US commentator Jackson Hinkle that the incident was an Israeli-planned "false flag" operation, a narrative relying on anti-Semitic tropes without evidence. A deepfake video impersonating a BBC News report, using AI-manipulated footage of presenter Sally Bundock, falsely alleged Indian and Mossad involvement, accumulating over 300,000 views before being flagged as "AI slop." Additional posts speculating on the perpetrator's nationality, including claims of Pakistani citizenship, circulated before official details emerged, with Reuters later identifying the attacker as an Omani national. ABC NEWS Verify advises scrutinizing sources, questioning motivations, and seeking corroboration from trusted news providers.
