FAA officially recognizes air taxis as new aircraft category in U.S
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially recognized air taxis as a new category of aircraft, marking the first addition in about 80 years. This includes finalized training and pilot certification rules, paving the way for their safe operation. Air taxis are electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles designed to be quieter and more compact than helicopters. Companies like Joby Aviation are advancing their designs, with plans for pilot-operated flights initially, moving towards autonomous capabilities in the future. While some companies face financial challenges, others are making progress. Joby aims to launch a ride-sharing service in the UAE by 2026 and hopes to operate during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Other countries are also planning to introduce air taxi services soon.
