Exploring Hexenkopf Ridge Preserve's witch's head rocks and healing history in Pennsylvania
Hexenkopf Ridge Preserve, located near Easton, Pennsylvania, features rocky outcroppings resembling a witch's head. The site has a history of superstitious healing practices known as powwowing, which were common from the 18th to mid-20th centuries. The preserve was established in 2020 after local residents donated over 70 acres to the county. It honors the late Ned Heindel, a historian who extensively researched the area's folklore and healing traditions, publishing a book on the subject shortly before his death in June 2023. Visitors can hike a loop trail that takes about 20-25 minutes. Plans for additional trails are in discussion, but no timeline has been set for their development. The area is also noted for its wildlife, including ticks and vultures.
