Experts warn of increased solar activity as Earth approaches the sun's battle zone
Experts warn that after the current solar maximum, a new phase called the "battle zone" may bring increased solar activity. This phase could last until 2028 and may pose risks to Earth-orbiting satellites due to heightened geomagnetic storms. The battle zone occurs when two magnetic bands from the sun compete for dominance, leading to more solar flares and the formation of coronal holes. These holes can create intense solar wind gusts, affecting the Earth's magnetosphere. While the battle zone may enhance auroras for skywatchers, it could complicate operations for satellite operators. Increased geomagnetic activity can cause satellites to experience more drag, raising the risk of malfunctions as the number of satellites in low-Earth orbit continues to grow.
