Experts warn acne flare-ups may signal rare pituitary gland cancer

A recent TikTok video has highlighted a potential link between acne breakouts and pituitary gland cancer, a rare condition affecting about 100 people annually. The cancer can disrupt hormone levels, leading to various skin symptoms, including acne. While most pituitary tumors are benign, they can still cause health issues. The tumors may produce excess cortisol, leading to increased oil production in the skin and acne. Some tumors can also cause unusual symptoms like excess hair growth or vision problems. Treatment for problematic tumors often involves surgery and radiotherapy. Some patients may require hormone replacement therapy. Research indicates that many people may have undiagnosed pituitary tumors, with estimates suggesting one in four could be affected.
