Experts propose new criteria for diagnosing obesity beyond body mass index

A group of global experts has proposed new criteria for diagnosing obesity, moving away from the body mass index (BMI) as the sole measure. The new approach includes waist circumference and health issues related to excess body fat. The report introduces two categories: clinical obesity, which includes those with health problems linked to obesity, and pre-clinical obesity, for those at risk without current illness. This change could reclassify about 20% of individuals previously deemed obese. The new definitions have support from over 75 medical organizations, but practical challenges remain. Accurate measurement and comprehensive health assessments are needed, and the implementation process may be slow and complex.
