Experts advocate more point-to-point speed cameras for safety

Road safety experts in Australia are calling for increased measures to reduce road fatalities, including more point-to-point speed cameras, expanded police patrols, and mandatory roadside drug testing after crashes. The push comes as Queensland's road deaths reached 303 last year, the highest since 2009. Point-to-point speed cameras, which measure average speed over a distance, are seen as effective in deterring speeding. The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) advocates for their installation in high-risk areas, along with stricter laws against reckless driving. Nationally, road fatalities have been rising, with 1,300 deaths reported in 2024, up from 1,258 in 2023. This trend marks the deadliest period on Australian roads since 2012, prompting calls for urgent action to improve road safety.
