European Union launches IRIS2 program to rival Starlink with new satellite network
The European Union has launched the IRIS2 program to compete with SpaceX's Starlink in satellite internet. This initiative, costing 10.6 billion euros, will deploy 290 satellites to provide high-speed internet and secure connectivity across Europe, starting in 2029. IRIS2 will focus on serving both government and civilian users, addressing specific European needs. It aims to enhance border surveillance, crisis management, and connectivity in underserved areas, unlike Starlink's global reach with over 7,000 satellites. The project is backed by the EU, the European Space Agency, and private companies in the SpaceRISE consortium. IRIS2's smaller satellite fleet will utilize advanced technology to deliver efficient services while promoting Europe's technological independence.
