European telecoms CEOs warn EU Huawei ban could cost €40 billion

Seventeen European telecoms CEOs have warned that proposed EU rules banning "high-risk" network suppliers could cost the sector up to €40 billion in replacement expenses. The planned Digital Networks Act, unveiled in January, would require operators to remove equipment from designated high-risk suppliers within three years, targeting Chinese firms like Huawei and ZTE without naming them directly. The open letter from lobby group Connect Europe argues the move drains capital needed for fibre, 5G and 6G infrastructure. The proposal is under negotiation between the European Parliament and EU member states, following a 2023 Commission recommendation that yielded patchy results. Only 10 countries enforced restrictions, with Sweden and Latvia acting firmly, France phasing out licences, and Germany planning removal by 2026-2029.
