EU suspends Brazilian beef imports over antibiotic concerns

The European Union has suspended imports of Brazilian animal products, including beef, over concerns about antibiotic use in livestock, effective Thursday. Brazilian exporters are scrambling to adjust to the sudden loss of this major market. Brazil, the world's largest beef exporter, shipped about 108,000 tons of beef worth roughly $1 billion to the EU in 2025. The EU cited Brazil's failure to guarantee compliance with standards against antibiotic growth promoters, a move Brazilian industry groups called unfair and politically motivated. The suspension affects only Brazil among Mercosur members and follows the EU's new antimicrobial compliance list. Analysts expect further EU measures against Brazil until the EU-Mercosur trade agreement is fully implemented, viewing the action as protection of European agribusiness.
