EU rules from August 2026 keep coffee capsules and pods out of unsorted waste

From August 12, 2026, EU packaging rules standardize coffee capsule and pod disposal, allowing them to be thrown away full and requiring producers to label recycling instructions. Under Regulation 2025/40, capsules and pods are officially classified as packaging. Aluminum or plastic versions follow local recycling rules; compostable ones go in organic waste. Labels must specify materials and how to sort extra components. Previously, no single EU rule governed disposal, causing inconsistent practices among municipalities and manufacturers. The regulation aims to reduce pollution from confusion over coffee machine waste.
