EU Refuses Ukraine Extra Funds Until Reforms Are Done
The European Union has rejected Ukraine's request for additional financial support this year, demanding that Kyiv first implement promised reforms to unlock further funding, according to the Financial Times. Ukraine had asked the European Commission to cover a $27 billion defense shortfall by advancing funds from the 90-billion-euro "Ukraine Support Loan" program for 2026-2027. Brussels refused to release 2027 funds early, insisting instead that Ukraine fulfill obligations to unlock about 34 billion euros by year's end. Required reforms include abolishing a tax exemption for small international parcels and introducing new digital platform taxation rules. The EU also warned against backtracking on commitments, citing softened requirements for politically exposed persons, while noting 2026 aid remains available if reforms proceed.
