EU plans to ban Russian oil and gas
The European Union proposed a plan Tuesday to ban all imports of Russian oil and natural gas, aiming to end reliance on Russian fossil fuels. This move comes over three years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The proposal includes phasing out Russian natural gas imports by 2027 and requiring member states to prepare plans to stop oil imports by the same year. The plan bypasses the need for unanimous approval, using trade and energy legislation. The EU has already significantly reduced Russian energy imports since the war began. The new proposal is part of the "REPowerEU" plan and includes additional sanctions, such as lowering the price cap on Russian oil.
