EU plans AI action plan to rival US, China
The European Union aims to become a global leader in artificial intelligence with its AI Continent Action Plan. This initiative seeks to address existing gaps in resources and infrastructure, aiming to catch up with leading AI developers. The plan focuses on open-source AI, removing barriers for data center construction, and securing AI chip supplies. The plan emphasizes open-source AI development to lower market entry barriers and promote independence. It also seeks to triple data center capacity by 2035, overcoming construction limitations. Securing AI chips from US-based providers is another priority, which faces restrictions. To achieve its goals, the EU plans to invest in AI chip manufacturing. It may leverage its strengths in lithography technology for an uninterrupted supply of chips. The EU is behind the US and China in AI development, and it seeks to bridge this gap with the new action plan and a €50 billion investment scheme.
