EU faces rising threat from drug-resistant bacteria in healthcare systems
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are increasingly threatening healthcare systems in the EU/EEA, with a rise in infections since 2019. Notably, bloodstream infections from carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae have surged in 23 member states. New strains of CRE, including hypervirulent K. pneumoniae ST23, are spreading in hospitals. Isolates of resistant E. coli are also being detected, raising concerns about community transmission. Treatment options remain limited despite new antibiotics. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) urges enhanced infection control measures and better coordination among hospitals. Recommendations include improved surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and rapid detection capabilities to combat the growing threat of CRE.
