EU considers import curbs for aluminum industry support

The European Commission is considering new import limits and export duties on metals, including aluminum, in response to recent U.S. tariffs. Proposed measures include export duties on scrap metal and a rule to prevent minimal transformation imports. These actions aim to support the EU's aluminum industry, which has faced market disruptions and lost market share over the past decade. The Commission plans to propose these measures by the third quarter of 2025. Additionally, the EU will introduce a new trade measure for steel based on tariff rate quotas, set to replace existing ones expiring in 2026. The upcoming plan is part of the EU's Clean Industrial Deal to enhance competitiveness.
