EPA begins review of vinyl chloride and other toxic chemicals for potential regulation
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is starting a formal review of five toxic chemicals, including vinyl chloride, which is linked to serious health risks. This review could lead to new limits or bans on these substances. Vinyl chloride is widely used in PVC production and is known to be a carcinogen. The review follows heightened scrutiny after a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023, which involved vinyl chloride and raised concerns about dioxin exposure. The EPA will spend three months gathering more information before deciding if these chemicals should be classified as high-priority under the Toxic Substances Control Act. This could lead to a formal study on their risks, but industry opposition is expected.
