Environmental groups suing Alliant Energy for groundwater pollution
Environmental groups plan to sue Alliant Energy's Iowa affiliate for allegedly discharging contaminated groundwater from a coal ash landfill without a permit. The groups claim the discharge contains harmful pollutants, including arsenic and barium. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources previously informed Alliant that its discharge did not meet permit requirements. Alliant has not applied for a new permit, leading to ongoing pollution concerns. Alliant Energy stated it is working with the DNR to address the issue. The company plans to reroute the discharge to the Des Moines River, pending necessary approvals.
