Elgin Community College to build $85 million manufacturing center to boost skilled workforce
Elgin Community College will begin construction next month on an $85 million Manufacturing and Technology Center, the second-largest of its kind in Illinois. The new facility will significantly expand lab and instructional space for manufacturing programs, addressing a skilled labor shortage. The two-story center will cover 150,000 square feet and include features like solar panels and an atrium for employer engagement. Classes are expected to start in fall 2026, allowing the college to enhance its welding and other technical programs. The state is contributing $28.5 million to the project, which has been funded annually since 2019. The center aims to meet growing demand for skilled workers and support local economic development.
