Electrolyte-rich foods can boost hydration as winter approaches
As winter approaches, dehydration can still occur, despite common beliefs. Cold weather can reduce thirst, making it important to monitor hydration levels. Foods rich in electrolytes can help maintain hydration alongside water intake. Registered dietitian Gabriela Barreto suggests that fruits and vegetables are the best hydrating foods. She recommends consuming two to three servings of fruit and three to four servings of vegetables daily to meet hydration needs, which can account for 20% to 30% of fluid intake. Hydrating options include watermelon, cucumbers, zucchini, and citrus fruits. These foods are high in water content and provide essential vitamins and minerals. Combining them in meals can enhance hydration and overall nutrition.
