Egypt Warns of 'Super El Niño' Impact on Global Weather and Local Climate

Egypt's Meteorological Authority warned that the El Niño phenomenon, which began in May, may intensify into a "super El Niño" by late 2026, potentially becoming the strongest in over 50 years and driving extreme weather globally. Meteorologist Manar Ghanem explained that El Niño, a recurring climate pattern tied to warmer Pacific Ocean temperatures, disrupts global weather systems, causing floods and heavy rain in some regions like South America and Canada, while bringing heatwaves and drought to East Asia and Australia. Ghanem noted Egypt's impact would be limited but could still see extreme weather events. She emphasized that human-caused pollution and global warming remain the primary drivers of climate change, with El Niño amplifying their effects, urging early preparedness to reduce potential losses.
