EcoWaste urges reduction of toxic PVC campaign materials

inquirer.net

EcoWaste Coalition has called on candidates in the upcoming May 12 elections to limit the use of campaign tarpaulins made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Tests revealed that these materials contained cadmium levels exceeding 100 parts per million, which is above the European Commission's safety limit. The group found cadmium levels in plastic scraps from tarpaulin manufacturers ranging from 143 to 415 ppm. EcoWaste has also tested campaign materials from 12 senatorial candidates and plans to release the results soon. EcoWaste highlighted the environmental risks of cadmium, which is toxic to plants and animals and can accumulate in the body. The group urged the government to regulate cadmium in plastics to reduce pollution and health risks.
