Eastern barred bandicoots reintroduced to Australia after world-first breeding program

Eastern barred bandicoots, once extinct in the wild, have been reintroduced to Australia after a successful gene-mixing breeding program. This world-first initiative crossbred mainland and Tasmanian bandicoots, isolated for over 10,000 years, to overcome inbreeding issues that plagued earlier reintroduction attempts. Amazon's Right Now Climate Fund supported the program, aiming to establish a genetically healthy population of at least 500 bandicoots across multiple locations.
