East Jaintia Hills launches initiative against youth substance abuse

East Jaintia Hills district is taking strong action against substance abuse among its young people. The district has launched an initiative called "ia ka Mynried" to help address these issues and support the aspirations of youth. This program is led by the district administration and backed by the District Mineral Foundation. It has organized winter camps at 11 schools, benefiting 1,826 students so far. Recently, events were held to certify students who completed the program. These took place at St Peter Secondary School and at Sacred Heart and Byndihati Secondary Schools. Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla attended one of the certification events. She noted the positive impact that these winter camps have had on students, stating that the training they received could transform their lives. An official also mentioned that the program combines soft skills training with efforts to prevent substance abuse. District Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi emphasized the importance of recognizing personal talents as part of the initiative. He believes this helps young people build self-worth and understand their strengths.
