Dutch Wildfire Near Belgian Border Contained

A wildfire in the Netherlands, just across the Belgian border, is now under control after weeks of persistent heat and drought across Europe. The blaze was contained following a period of devastating fires and deadly thunderstorms in Southern Europe. The fire was brought under control as the region continues to grapple with extreme conditions. The ongoing heatwave has also highlighted infrastructure challenges, including grid congestion in the nearby Antwerp port area, where businesses face delays connecting to the electricity network. In response to these pressures, the new Brabo high-voltage line, a €350 million project connecting Belgium and the Netherlands, was inaugurated to add two gigawatts of capacity. This will help integrate renewable energy and reduce dependence on external sources, with further cross-border grid reinforcements planned by 2035.
