Düsseldorf replaces gas lanterns with LEDs

zeit.de (German)

Düsseldorf has converted its first 200 gas lanterns to LED, a move aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2035. This switch to electricity replaces gas lighting. The city plans to convert nearly all 13,600 gas lanterns, with the initial phase approved by the state government after overcoming objections from historical preservationists. The exterior design of the lanterns will be preserved. The conversion follows a period during the energy crisis when the city temporarily switched off some gas lanterns to conserve gas. The LED conversion is expected to reduce emissions and energy consumption significantly.
