DST Secretary calls for light regulation as AI develops in India

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is focusing on quantum technologies and has launched a national quantum mission. This includes funding for startups in quantum communications and computing, with eight startups recently supported. DST is not currently funding 6G startups but is working on a national mission that encompasses cyber security, 5G, and IoT technologies. The Ministry of Electronics is also developing AI programs, particularly for Indian languages. DST Secretary Abhay Karandikar stated that AI is still in its early stages and suggested a light regulatory approach. The department is also addressing skill gaps by developing a curriculum for quantum technologies in engineering colleges.
