Drug-resistant fungus Candida auris spreads rapidly in European hospitals
European hospitals are seeing a significant rise in infections from the drug-resistant fungus Candida auris. The actual extent of the problem is likely underestimated due to insufficient systematic monitoring and reporting. In 2023, 1,346 cases were recorded across 18 EU/EEA countries, a 67% increase from the previous year. Outbreaks were also noted in Cyprus, France, and Germany in 2024, with the ECDC calling it a serious threat to patients and healthcare systems. Candida auris spreads through direct contact, adheres to surfaces, and resists many disinfectants. It is also often resistant to antifungal medications, leading to severe, hard-to-treat infections with mortality rates up to 60% in vulnerable patients.
