Drones to deliver medicine to Italy's smallest town, Morterone
A drone test in Morterone, Italy's smallest town with 31 residents, is exploring aerial delivery of urgent medicines to combat its isolation, potentially becoming a regular service. The trial flight assessed suitable aircraft, routes, landing points, and costs for transporting pharmaceuticals to the remote mountain village. The initiative, led by electronic engineer Daniele Invernizzi, whose 80-year-old mother lives there, involves specialists from Brescia-based company Kiwi. Morterone lacks a pharmacy, medical clinic, and first aid point, and is a 17-kilometer, 45-minute drive on winding roads from essential services. Mayor Dario Pesenti envisions drones eventually supplying local businesses and mountain refuges, creating enterprise and job opportunities. He calls the town an ideal laboratory for pioneering solutions to shorten distances and reduce travel times in isolated areas.
