Drone Captures Emperor Penguin Chicks Leaping 15 Meters Into Antarctic Waters
A drone has captured dramatic footage of emperor penguin chicks leaping from a 15-meter ice shelf into Antarctic waters, filmed by a National Geographic team for the documentary "Secrets of the Penguins." The footage shows dozens of chicks hesitating on the ice edge before jumping, with all surviving the fall and swimming together in the Southern Ocean. The three-person team, led by Emmy and BAFTA-winning explorer Bertie Gregory, spent 274 days filming a colony of about 20,000 penguins on Antarctica's Ekström ice shelf. Scientists note some colonies now breed on ice shelves rather than floating sea ice, potentially offering greater resilience to warming temperatures, though climate change remains a threat. The three-episode series, narrated by Blake Lively, also documents hybrid penguin chicks and a hidden African penguin colony.
