DOJ launches campaign to end violence against women in the Philippines
The Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched its participation in the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, running from November 25 to December 12, 2024. Undersecretary Atty. Margarita Gutierrez emphasized the campaign's goal to raise awareness and support for survivors. Recent statistics reveal that nearly 1 in 5 women in the Philippines have faced violence from intimate partners. The DOJ reported 8,055 cases of violence against women and children in 2023, while local data indicated 45,480 cases, highlighting a significant reporting gap. The DOJ is implementing various initiatives, including the Safe Spaces Act and the Men Opposed to Violence Against Women Everywhere (MOVE) program. These efforts aim to create safe environments for victims and promote accountability in addressing violence against women.
