Depression could cost Morocco over $21 billion by 2050, according to a new international study, with most losses stemming from reduced workforce participation and productivity rather than healthcare spending. The estimate covers cumulative economic losses from 2025 to 2050. Published in Nature Medicine, the study projects Morocco's losses at $21.23 billion, with a range of $16.47 billion to $27.25 billion depending on assumptions. This averages 0.504% of GDP annually, or $493 per person over the period, including costs from absenteeism, lower productivity, and treatment expenses. The study, covering 154 countries, estimates global depression losses near $12 trillion by 2050. Researchers note limitations in diagnosis reporting but conclude that expanding prevention, early diagnosis, and mental healthcare access could yield substantial economic benefits.
