Periodontitis, or severe gum disease, causes persistent inflammation; bacteria and inflammatory molecules can enter the bloodstream through damaged gums, disrupting insulin response, a defining feature of type 2 diabetes. Experts call this a bidirectional relationship. Persistent high blood sugar delays healing and weakens infection-fighting ability, increasing vulnerability to gum disease. A Dentistry Journal study found people with type 2 diabetes had reduced saliva flow and more severe cavities.
