DENR builds water impounding, rainwater systems as strong El Niño looms
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has built small water impounding structures and rainwater harvesting systems to help communities cope with reduced rainfall as a possible "very strong" El Niño looms before yearend. The structures will provide additional water supply during dry periods, alongside conservation measures. DENR has mobilized regional offices and field units to strengthen nationwide preparations against prolonged dry conditions, reduced water availability, and extreme heat, with Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna directing proactive execution of climate adaptation protocols. PAGASA warned the ongoing El Niño may intensify into a very strong event before end of 2026 and persist through first half of 2027. Preparations cover watershed protection, forest-fire prevention, and personnel safeguards, including information campaigns in Central Luzon, coral bleaching monitoring in Aurora, and advisories to mining companies in Caraga.
