Delhi's Connaught Place may go vehicle-free as NDMC chief seeks public views

New Delhi's Connaught Place may restrict vehicles in its Inner Circle, as the new NDMC chief Manoj Kumar Dwivedi seeks public input on making the area pedestrian-friendly, sparking mixed reactions from residents and traders. The proposal suggests either full-day vehicle bans or specific time slots, with concerns raised over business impact and traffic. Dwivedi posted on X asking whether the Inner Circle should be vehicle-free all day or during set hours, such as 6pm to midnight in summers and 11am to 4pm in winters, and what activities could be held in Central Park. While some users support time-slot restrictions avoiding peak hours, the New Delhi Traders Association opposes the plan, citing past trials that caused sharp footfall drops and chaotic parking, and argues existing 15-foot corridors and 20-foot walking spaces already suffice if encroachments are cleared. Previous pedestrianisation attempts in 2017 and 2019 failed due to trader opposition, and in April 2026 Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu sought an action plan for high-footfall areas. The NDMC is now gathering public views on timing and activities, though traders insist they must be consulted before any changes.
