Dela Rosa challenges Palace official over Duterte's arrest
Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa has responded to comments made by Palace Press Officer Claire Castro regarding the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Dela Rosa questioned Castro, asking if she would surrender to authorities in light of what he described as injustices. This remark came after Castro suggested that leaders should face allegations against them instead of avoiding them. In an interview, Dela Rosa emphasized the challenges he faces, questioning the value of Castro's statements. He pointed out that the arrest of Duterte and the actions taken by the government might serve political interests rather than the good of the country. He asked if taking Duterte to The Hague would be beneficial for the Philippines. Dela Rosa, who served as the first Chief of the Philippine National Police under Duterte, has been linked to the administration’s controversial war on drugs. This campaign is believed to have resulted in a significant number of deaths, with government estimates at around 6,000, while human rights groups suggest the toll is between 12,000 and 30,000. Recently, Dela Rosa stated that he would only confront legal issues within the Philippines and would not submit to a foreign court. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Duterte related to alleged crimes against humanity during the drug war. Duterte is currently in The Hague and recently attended a pre-trial hearing via video link.
