Degamo's widow criticizes Timor court's extradition ruling
The widow of slain Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo is upset with a Timorese court's ruling. The court has rejected the Philippines' request to extradite Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves, who is accused of being involved in her husband's murder. Mayor Janice Degamo said the decision is "peculiar and difficult to understand," suggesting that the court might be influenced by powerful individuals. Janice expressed her trust in the Philippine government's efforts to bring Teves back to the country. She plans to meet with Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla to discuss the situation and any future plans. The Department of Justice (DOJ) highlighted that Teves faces serious charges, including multiple counts of murder. They aim to appeal the court's decision and assure safety for Teves if extradited. Remulla criticized the Timorese legal system, describing it as "immature." He emphasized that the court's ruling had no solid foundation since the Philippines has abolished the death penalty. The Timor-Leste court cited a constitutional provision that prevents extradition if there is a risk of cruel treatment. The DOJ believes the appeal will clarify concerns about potential mistreatment of Teves upon his return. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro indicated that this decision could impact ongoing cases against Teves. He faces multiple charges related to the deadly attack that killed Governor Degamo and nine others in March 2023. Teves has consistently denied the accusations.
