Dallas Cowboys considering extensions for 2022 draft class players
The Dallas Cowboys have some important decisions to make this offseason regarding player contracts. All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons is not the only player in line for an extension. Three other key players from the 2022 draft class also need attention. First-round pick Tyler Smith, who plays guard, has been a standout. He is only 24 years old and has already earned Pro Bowl honors. Smith is seen as a crucial piece for the Cowboys' offensive line, especially after the retirement of Zack Martin. Smith is eager to be a leader for the team. Tight end Jake Ferguson and cornerback DaRon Bland also need new contracts. Ferguson filled in at the Pro Bowl last season, while Bland led the league in interceptions and set a record for touchdown returns. However, both players faced injuries last year that impacted their performances. The Cowboys recently freed up over $55 million in salary cap space. This money could be used to extend Parsons, Smith, Ferguson, and Bland's contracts. Historically, the team has signed extensions early, which allows salary cap flexibility. However, the recent management has not followed this trend. Negotiating contracts can be tricky. If the Cowboys wait too long, they might end up paying more later. Parsons has expressed he wants to remain with the Cowboys long term, and the team has indicated a willingness to sign him. But if they prioritize Parsons, they might miss the chance to secure extensions for Smith, Ferguson, or Bland this year. Ideally, the Cowboys would sign all four players to extensions before the season starts. However, with their past record, it may be more realistic to aim for one or two extensions in the near future.
