Cyclone Fengal causes severe flooding and damage in Tamil Nadu despite low intensity
Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry on November 30, bringing wind speeds of 75-95 km/h. Despite being classified as a low-intensity storm, it caused severe damage, resulting in at least 12 deaths and extensive flooding in Tamil Nadu. The cyclone's slow movement was a key factor in its impact. Fengal moved at less than 6 km/h over the sea and remained stationary for nearly 12 hours after landfall, leading to heavy rainfall. Areas like Mailam village recorded over 500 mm of rain in 24 hours. This prolonged rainfall caused significant flooding, disrupting transport and inundating roads. In contrast, more intense cyclones in recent years caused fewer casualties, highlighting how Fengal's unique movement contributed to its destructive effects.
