Covid-19 still circulating, experts advise immunity boosters
Five years after its emergence, the Covid-19 virus is still present but less dangerous than before. Experts believe it is not a major threat, yet they encourage people to maintain strong immunity. Since the strict lockdowns in India began in March 2020, Covid-19 has affected millions. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus was no longer a global health emergency in May 2023. Still, recent reports indicate ongoing infections, with 147,000 new cases and 4,500 deaths worldwide from January to February 2025. Virologist Shahid Jameel notes that the virus has weakened over time. He emphasizes that while it remains risky for certain individuals, it is less of a concern for the general public. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist at WHO, supports this view, advising that while occasional outbreaks occur, there is no need for alarm. To enhance immunity against Covid-19, doctors recommend several strategies. First, staying updated with vaccinations is essential, especially for those with weakened immunity. Dr. Gagandeep Kang urges eligible individuals to get booster shots. Second, a healthy diet is crucial. Foods rich in vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics can bolster the immune system, according to Dr. Priya Abraham. Additionally, regular sleep and exercise play significant roles in immunity. Dr. Randeep Guleria emphasizes that both are vital for recovery and defense against infections. Lastly, maintaining basic hygiene is important. Although masks and hand sanitizers are no longer required, washing hands and avoiding crowded places can help reduce infection risk, as noted by Dr. Swaminathan.
