Cornell and World Coffee Research launch program to boost coffee farmer resilience
Cornell University and World Coffee Research have launched a new Coffee Improvement Program, funded by over $5 million from USAID. The program aims to enhance the resilience and productivity of smallholder coffee farmers, who produce 60% of the world’s coffee.
The initiative will develop advanced breeding tools to combat diseases and improve coffee quality. It will also strengthen national coffee breeding programs in nine countries, focusing on better seed access for farmers.
This program builds on previous investments in coffee research and aims to modernize coffee breeding. It will support farmers in adapting to climate challenges while ensuring a diverse supply of coffee for the global market.
