Consumers navigate differences between 'Made in Canada' and 'Product of Canada' labels
Consumers are facing confusion over the labels "Product of Canada" and "Made in Canada." The former indicates that at least 98% of production costs were incurred in Canada, while the latter means at least 51% but less than 98%. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several premiers have encouraged Canadians to buy domestic goods amid U.S. tariff threats. However, many products labeled as Canadian are made by international companies with local factories. The Competition Bureau advises clear labeling for products that do not meet the thresholds for "Product of" or "Made in." Violations of these labeling rules can result in significant fines for companies.
