Companies leave soy moratorium, increasing Amazon deforestation risk
Major international companies have withdrawn from the Soy Moratorium, a key defense against Amazon deforestation. This move follows Mato Grosso state's elimination of tax incentives for soy traders adhering to the 2006 pact. The Soy Moratorium, which prevented the purchase of soy from deforested land since July 2008, significantly reduced deforestation. Its abandonment by companies like JBS and Cargill raises concerns about increased forest clearing for soy cultivation. While large companies may maintain their environmental reputation, smaller producers could exploit the situation. The Mercosur trade agreement and potential shifts in Chinese soy imports also pose risks, potentially pushing cattle ranching into the Amazon.
