City plans to repurpose gatehouses at Central Park
New York City is planning to repurpose two historic gatehouses located at the Central Park Reservoir. These buildings were originally built during the Civil War to manage water from upstate New York flowing into the city. However, they no longer serve that function, as the reservoir is not part of the city’s water supply system anymore. Rohit Aggarwala, the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, sees new potential for the gatehouses. The south gatehouse features a prominent clock and offers stunning views from its balcony. Located near Fifth Avenue, it is a notable landmark for many visitors and joggers who enjoy the surrounding 1.5-mile path around the reservoir. The city hopes to give the gatehouses a new life and purpose, transforming them into something that benefits the community while preserving their historical significance.
