Chinese woman arrested in US for spying on Taiwan president's son
A 34-year-old Chinese woman, Wanying "Heather" Zhang, was arrested in the U.S. for allegedly surveilling Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's son in Seattle, with FBI charges revealing her role as an agent for Chinese intelligence. Zhang, a real estate agent in Southern California, was recruited in June 2025 through a college contact from Beijing International Studies University, linked to China's Ministry of State Security. She met an official in Changsha and received surveillance tasks, communicating via WeChat. FBI evidence shows Zhang and an accomplice filmed the target's residence on September 1, using AirDrop to avoid detection. The case follows other U.S. prosecutions of Chinese agents, including a 2024 conviction for infiltrating Chinese dissident groups.
