Chinese scientists use bacteria to turn desert into farmland in ten months

cnn.gr (Greek)

Chinese scientists are using cyanobacteria to transform desert land into arable soil within ten months. The technique involves applying cyanobacteria cultures to straw grids on sand, creating a stable, dark membrane that resists sandstorms and retains moisture and nutrients. This allows for the planting of shrubs and grasses. This method, tested in northwest China, significantly reduces soil erosion and offers a new tool for combating desertification by stabilizing sand and gradually restoring ecosystems.
