China refuels satellite, advancing orbital logistics
China successfully refueled a satellite in geostationary orbit, demonstrating a capability the U.S. has discussed but not operationalized. This achievement allows China to extend satellite lifespans and maneuverability in strategically vital orbits. The refueling operation, performed by the Shijian-25 spacecraft on Shijian-21, signifies China's advancement in orbital logistics. This capability is crucial for dynamic space operations, enabling satellites to evade threats and maintain strategic positions. While the U.S. explored similar technology in 2007, it has not been implemented operationally. The U.S. Space Force is now considering investments in satellite servicing and refueling, recognizing the need to move beyond disposable assets.
