China introduces humanoid robots to enhance elderly care services

China is introducing humanoid robots into its elderly care services to address the growing needs of its aging population. This initiative, announced by the State Council, aims to integrate advanced technologies like AI and brain-computer interfaces into elder care by 2029. As of the end of 2023, over 216 million citizens in China are aged 65 and above, highlighting a critical demand for innovative care solutions. The country currently has only 8.2 million elderly care beds, prompting the government to develop intelligent home systems and a national care information platform. This demographic challenge is not unique to China; the Asia Pacific region is also facing a significant increase in elderly populations. The Asian Development Bank projects that the number of individuals aged 60 and over in the region will double to 1.2 billion by 2050, necessitating urgent policy reevaluation and innovative care solutions.
