China approves construction of world's largest hydropower dam on Yarlung Zangbo River
China has approved the construction of the world's largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River. The dam is expected to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, significantly more than the current largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam. This new project could impact millions in India and Bangladesh by altering the river's flow and local ecology. Concerns have been raised about potential displacement of people and environmental effects, although Chinese officials claim the impact will be minimal. The dam's construction costs are expected to exceed those of the Three Gorges Dam, which displaced 1.4 million people. Authorities have not disclosed how many people may be affected by this new project in Tibet.
